Skin Procedures
Vein Injections (Sclerotherapy)
There is no single way to get rid of unsightly veins and capillaries. Many techniques are in vogue including lasers, pulsed light and injections. None of these consistently work on every patient. We use the injection technique for small "spider veins." Usually, you will need a number of visits to address all areas of concern as just a few areas are injected at a time.

Scar Repair or Scar Revision
Even though a scar cannot be completely removed, there are several ways to improve a scar's appearance. It depends on skin type and circumstances. Scar improvements can be accomplished through surgery, injections and/or steroid medications. The most common types of scars that are treated are keloids, hypertrophic scars and contractures.

Fat Grafting
As we age, the fat in our faces diminishes and the deflated skin tends to sag. Fat grafting is a way to replenish what has been lost and restore a more youthful look. Fat is harvested from the patient's own body, typically from the lower abdomen, thighs or buttocks, and injected into the areas that need more volume and contouring. The areas enhanced are usually the cheeks, lips and lower eyelids. Fat grafting can be done under local anesthesia with sedation and recovery takes about one to two weeks. Fat grafting can also be combined with other procedures, most commonly face and neck lifts.

Skin Grafting
A wound that is wide and difficult or impossible to close directly may be treated with a skin graft. A skin graft is basically a patch of healthy skin that is taken from one area of the body, called the donor site, and used to cover another area where skin is missing or damaged.
There are three basic types of skin grafts.
- A split-thickness skin graft, commonly used to treat burn wounds, uses only the layers of skin closest to the surface. When possible, your plastic surgeon will choose a less conspicuous donor site. Location will be determined in part by the size and color of the skin patch needed. The skin will grow back at the donor site, however, it may be a bit lighter in color.
- A full-thickness skin graft might be used to treat a burn wound that is deep and large, or to cover jointed areas where maximum skin elasticity and movement are needed. As its name implies, the surgeon lifts a full-thickness (all layers) section of skin from the donor site. A thin-line scar usually results from a direct wound closure at the donor site. A composite graft is used when the wound to be covered needs more underlying support, as with skin cancer on the nose.
- A composite graft requires lifting all the layers of skin, fat, and sometimes the underlying cartilage from the donor site. A straight-line scar will remain at the site where the graft was taken. It will fade with time.

Chemical Peel
Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of the skin to smooth its texture and produce healthy, glowing skin. It can also reduce scarring, remove blemishes and remove pre-cancerous growths. Specific formulas and strengths are customized to meet each patient's needs. Some of the lightest peels are done by our licensed aesthetician in our office and require no time off from regular activities. The deeper peels, such as trichloroacetic or phenol peels, are done by the doctor in the office. Healing may take up to one or two weeks. Most patients are able to go out in public after about a week with proper make-up. Some pinkness can persist for a while so sun protection is very important following a peel. Our aesthetician can assist with make-up and sun protection advice. We offer top quality sun protection products and Iredale mineral make-up as the healthiest choices.

Dermabrasion
This may sound intimidating, but mechanical sanding of the facial skin is quite effective in improving wrinkles and acne scars. This is an in-office procedure done under local anesthesia and takes about an hour to complete. You will get a kit to help heal your skin after the procedure. Most patients can go out within a week. Sun protection is very important for the next few months and our licensed aesthetician can help you with this.

Medical Roll-Cit ("Needling")
This is a revolutionary technique which increases the effectiveness of skin care products, allowing improved penetration of skin-enhancing vitamins into the active layers of the skin. The procedure also helps restore skin tightness and softens fine lines through the production of more collagen. It takes a few minutes under a local anesthetic and is done in the office by the doctor. This process is particularly effective when repeated a few times.

Injectables and Fillers
Sometimes patients are not yet ready for or wish to postpone surgical procedures. We also agree that surgery can be delayed and have many patients that are under our care for in-office, non-invasive alternatives such as injectables and fillers. The doctor works directly with patients on these popular alternatives such as BOTOX and Juvéderm, which are discussed separately below.

JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel
Juvéderm® is an injectable gel that gently reverses many signs of aging in the face, including fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, thinning lips and loosening skin. It can also "plump up" the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. Juvéderm® comes in three formulas optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Results last about six to nine months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection.
