Body Procedures
Liposuction (Lipoplasty / Suction Lipectomy)
This popular procedure sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat which has not responded to diet or exercise. The most common areas are the abdomen, waist, hips, back, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks and arms. It is not a treatment for obesity. This procedure is often combined with other rejuvenative procedures such as a tummy tuck or arm lift. Our preferred method of liposuction is with the initial injection of a small amount of fluid with a local anesthetic into the area. Next, a vibrating thin tube is placed in the same area of fat which is then suctioned out. The suction is carried out through tiny, inconspicuous incisions. A pressure garment will be recommended after your procedure to help you heal quickly.
You may have heard of alternatives to liposuction such as mesotherapy and lipolite. These techniques may be trendy but they are unproven. Newer techniques of liposuction are also being aggressively marketed, some of which involve the use of a laser. There is no large study that properly evaluates these in terms of safety and effectiveness. Our office is monitoring the development of these techniques but does not recommend them at this time.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
This procedure helps to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by tightening the belly muscles and removing extra fat and skin. Ideal candidates have excess fat and loose skin concentrated around the lower abdomen that has not responded well to diet and exercise. It can also be especially useful if you have stretched skin and muscles from a pregnancy. The procedure is done in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia and takes approximately three hours. Recovery is usually two to three weeks. The scar line is placed along your bikini line and fades over time. The results can be very impressive.

Mini-Tuck or Minituck (Limited Incision Abdominoplasty)
The mini-tuck is for contour problems that are not as extensive as those for a standard abdominoplasty yet are too extensive for liposuction alone. It can involve various elements such as liposuction, limited skin sculpting below the belly button, tightening of abdominal muscles as necessary and slight adjustment of skin above the belly button when it is moved. The scar is usually smaller for the limited abdominoplasty and is placed just above the pubis.

Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy)
This procedure is often done on patients who have lost significant amounts of weight following gastric bypass surgery, but it could also be very effective in others who have significant overall skin laxity of the body. Many of these patients have lost between 100-150 pounds and have loose, stretchy skin around the entire body such as the abdomen, arms, thighs and face. This not only does not look good but can interfere with normal activities and movement. The body lift removes loose skin from the front and sides of the abdomen as in a tummy tuck, but also extends the skin removal circumferentially around to the lower back, just above the buttocks. The results are dramatic with a tighter looking abdomen, longer legs and uplifted buttocks. Body lift surgery after weight loss surgery often involves several stages to address the entire body. It is often followed later on by surgery on the inner thighs, arms, breasts and face.

Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
This is another common operation done for patients who have had massive weight loss. The excess skin and fat in the upper arms which hangs down is removed from the elbow to the armpit. As in a thigh lift, this procedure is often combined with liposuction to obtain the best results. Depending on the situation, the scar can simply be placed in the arm pit. More typically, the scar will be placed in an inconspicuous location along the inside of the arm and it gets lighter over time.

Thigh Lift
Loose skin in the upper thigh area, especially on the inner side, can sometimes be very difficult to completely correct with diet and exercise. If you have lost a significant amount of weight, you will notice that excess skin can be present all the way down to the knees. A thigh lift is performed to remove excess skin and fat along the inside of your leg while lifting and tightening the skin in this region. Incision lines are usually located along the groin crease and sometimes extend along the inseam of your thigh for a variable distance depending upon how much skin needs to be removed. A thigh lift can be combined with liposuction to achieve a more smooth overall appearance. This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and is often combined with an upper arm lift, tummy tuck or breast lift.

Buttock Lift
The buttocks can be lifted and shaped to be cosmetically more pleasing using limited incisions hidden in the panty line areas. Sometimes excess fat from the adjacent areas can be used to fill out the buttocks, achieving a more round and firm contour. This procedure is done under general anesthesia and lasts about two to three hours.

Complex Hernia Repair
A hernia occurs when tissue or part of an organ, usually the intestines, protrudes through the abdominal wall. Hernias do not heal on their own. Among the most common procedures in the U.S., hernia surgery pushes the protruding tissue back into place and repairs the weakened or torn muscle that allowed it to pass through. This alleviates pain and corrects or prevents the occurrence of more serious problems. This procedure is often combined with an aesthetic procedure such as a thigh lift or tummy tuck.
